MAYHEM 2003 SUMMARY

I spent 8 hours polishing the wheels on my red V1200 and dodged two major thunder showers on my ride up from Denver to Buena Vista on Friday, June 20, 2003, which should have only been a two hour ride but turned into four. I showed up a half hour before the 2pm Madura Show. I went out of my way to keep the bike clean and dry, and by the time we got around to doing the show, another thunder shower moved down off the 14,000ft. peaks surrounding Buena Vista and we rushed to move all the bikes under the protection of the Best Western driveway overhang. The wind blew the rain and most of the bikes got wet anyway.

Everyone voted for Best Original and Best Custom as the brief thunder shower passed by. After the bike show, we lined the Maduras up for the photo shoot in several configurations, while a dozen cameras clicked from all angles. Too bad the sun wasn't shining! There were probably more digital cameras at this event than the two years before, so I'll keep adding to this page as I have time.

We all gathered at the Buffalo Bar & Grill across the street from the Best Western for dinner, mostly filling an entire side room in the restaurant, and swapped stories. My wife Liz drove up separately after work but not in time for dinner.

Saturday morning we took up three tables at a breakfast restaurant, gaining several members as a whole group of Maduras rode in from Nebraska. By the time we all gassed up our bikes for the morning ride up the mountains, a couple of others showed up as well. Turns out quite a few people showed up with their Maduras that we never heard of before. (I'm no good for names, so I'll need someone else's help here to fill in the blanks).

Anyway, our morning ride was 48 miles round-trip and took us up to Cottonwood Pass at 12,126 feet, with awesome views over both sides of the Continental Divide. After the ride, one of the guys had an uncle who happened to live right there in Buena Vista, and we took 18 Maduras over and lined them up right in his yard, while he fired up 4 charcoal grills and served us steaks and burgers! What a deal! (Again, help with the names please!)

Our afternoon ride was even more breath-taking than the first, with a 86 mile round-trip up Independence Pass, again to the top of the Continental Divide at 12,095 feet. Our trip took us past post-card-perfect mountain lakes and valleys, with plenty of curvies, and a mile stretch that was literally carved out of the side of a mountain with 1000ft+ drop-offs at the edge of the road.

Saturday night was another get-together at a sports bar, where we wound down and found out who won Best Custom and Best Original. All I remember is that I won best Original Stock, and I was glad all my polishing was worth it, but so excited about it, I forgot who else won... help me out here! It was a good time.

It was great to meet everyone who came, and Liz and I both had a great time, and great rides through those awesome, made-for-motorcycle roads! We hope to meet everyone again next year for more of the fun! Thanks to everyone who helped make the Mayhem 2003 a reality, especially Greg who helped get me a hotel room right in Buena Vista at the last minute! (All the rooms were booked up because of an annual bicycle-riders event). Great food and great fun, let's do it again!

SOME PICS OF DON BEBEE

These are pics with Don Bebee in them, with little green arrows pointing to him for those of you who don't know what he looks like. Don was a caring and generous friend of the Madura community, and made it to the last Mayhem all the way from Canada, despite being deathly ill. The people at the Mayhem got to meet Don in person. Sadly, Don passed away on Wednesday night, July 9th, 2003, leaving behind his wife and son. These are for us to remember him by.
