MAYHEM 2004 SUMMARY

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin was the site of 2004. For many Midwesterner this is the vacation spot to be. They have more go-cart tracks and water slides than just about anywhere in the world. Mayhem was off to a rough start. Two weeks before the Mayhem the hotel we all had reservations for had not yet opened for the season and it did not look like it was going to open. With one week to spare we found the Fairview Motel and the owners and their family were the greatest of hosts. The owner even went out and bought a new grill for us to use. We all highly recommend this place if you ever find yourself in the Wisconsin Dells area.

The showing of Madura owners was great. We all had the chance to see Terry Copple's Madura with the Voerex side car in person. Yes, a side car. Terry rode in from Nebraska for the event. I am not sure if that was as shocking as seeing Doug Lawrence's Dragon red GV700 from Indiana. It was fun to see the different things that people have done over the years to their bikes. We all owe a huge thanks to a friend of ours from Wisconsin Rapids, Bob. At the writing of this I have forgotten Bob's last name but he put the greatest ride together for us. Bob is not even a Madura owner! I have met him at a few rides around the country and I contacted him for the help on the 2004 Mayhem. He even rode captain on the Saturday ride. Bob led us along the Wisconsin River on some great winding roads though an area that Frank Lloyd Wright made famous with his Taliesin and other creations.

We ended stopping at this family restaurant that had the best home-cooked buffet I can remember ever eating at. The placed opened up the back banquet room for us.

After the completion of the day of riding we made our way back to the motel. We set up the bikes for pictures and showing. We also set up for partying the remainder of the day and night.

A thanks has to go out to the Lester family for putting together a great picnic meal. Gerry and Mark convinced Cyrena to come out this year. I think she is hooked. Her and Gerry have already contacted me to do it all again for 2005 in West Virginia.

I don't think I have to tell anyone that has ever been to a Mayhem that there were a few that had a little to much fun as in alcohol and a few that stayed up a little to late. A couple riders who shall remain nameless walked back to the motel some time close to sunrise.

I thought it was hard to have a greater time than the first Mayhem in Eureka Springs or the one in Kentucky, but 2004 may have come close. I just wish I did not have the flu the whole weekend. I was glad when the ride was over on Saturday, only so I could finally take some flu medicine.

The funniest thing was when a few of us were wondering the roads on Friday we pulled in to a gas station in Reedsburg, WI. We ran into a Madura! At the pump was TJ Gease on his GV700 talking to another ex-Madura owner! Neither knew that we were having our Mayhem down the street. They were talking about their Maduras as five of us pulled up. Imagine their surprise.

The show and awards have had the bar raised. The bikes are looking better and better every year. Ray Nikkel took first place on the best custom GV1200 and Doug Lawrence took it for the GV700s. In Original Stock yours truly took home for best GV1200 and Linda walked away with the GV700 Best Original Stock. Now we added Best restored for 2004. For this ward credit goes to the Lester family, Gerry's 1200 barely beat out Mark's for first place, and then there was Chris Scott and his GV700. I think it still may have had some 1985 dirt on it. Just kidding Chris. Also going home with trophies were Charlie Hopkins, Marlene and Mark Lester.

It was a year to remember and would love to do it again. How about West Virginia next June?
