Madura Mayhem 2005 was another success. Several Madura owners brought their pride and joys to Boyer Station for a great weekend. We may not of had as large of a turn out as in previous years but the enthusiasm was as high as ever.
When Craig Englanghart pulled up on his 85 GV1200, everyone was impressed, but to hear he has owned it for 20 years and has had two accidents with it, you just have to stand there in awe. It is a great looking bike. In fact so good he took home two trophies for the bike. "Best Original Stock GV1200" and he took home "Madura of the Year". Well deserved.
A special thanks has to go to our WV hosts. Jim and Sue Burton. I believe Jim was on cloud nine for more than a week before and two weeks after. The Burtons were a tremendous help. They found the location and just about helped with every detail of the weekend. If you do make it to WV you better stop in. If you don’t they will be very upset with you.
Another thanks goes out to the Lester family. Once again they have put together a great picnic dinner for us. This allowed us to sit around the camp fire and tell stories of all our Madura adventures and admire each others bikes. It was Mark Lester that deservedly went home with the "Best Restored G1200" for 2005.
In mentioning the awards a thanks has to go out to Ray and Linda for once again donating the trophies. They were unable to attend this year due to business. We all have hopes they will be back next year to take back the title from me, "Best Custom GV1200".
There may not of been a huge number of attendees but the voting for the awards was tough. Daryl Hatcher brought his newly bought GV700. To even his surprise found he has one great looking, trophy winning "Original Stock GV700". Oh he was missing a screw or two but we were more than willing to help him out on that. His wife was allegedly over heard saying she was glad she picked Mayhem over her high school reunion. I think it was a wise choice too.
Tom Reid rode in on his GV700 with Craig. They decided they did not live far enough from Mayhem so they took the long way from the south via the Blue Ridge Parkway before they arrived. Tom was able to go home carrying the "Best Custom GV700" award. He has done it up right, just to fit him on those long wondering rides he does.
If you ever find yourself in the Marlington or Boyer area, a stop for a meal at Boyer Station is highly recommended. The location was one of the best we have seen yet. It was hard to find a straight road. The roads were some of the smoothest and twisty I have had the pleasure. I know I will be back for more riding.
One last thanks to everyone who attended and participated. It is always great to meet Madura owners, if it's for the first time or the hundredth time. Like the ads said more than 20 years ago "A Breed Apart"
Work is now on to Eureka Springs, Arkansas for June of 2006. There is a small monument there to the original Madura Mayhem and those who attended. In a small bike shop on the door leading to the work area under a few coats and leathers is the signatures of those who attended the first Mayhem. We will be looking forward to seeing you all there.
