MIDWEST SALARIES INCREASED ACROSS THE BOARD, TECHNICAL POSITIONS RECEIVED LARGEST PAY RAISES, SAYS NORTHERN ILLINOIS BUSINESS ASSOCIATION'S 1998 WAGE AND SALARY SURVEY
Palatine, IL - Salaries for exempt and non-exempt employees in 1998 increased an average of 2.5% from 1997, according to the Northern Illinois Business Association's (NIBA) 47th Annual Wage and Salary Survey.
"This year's survey showed a response to the tightness in the labor market, especially in the fields of Information Technology and Engineering," said NIBA President and CEO Candace Renwall. In addition, a breakdown of engineering fields revealed that the more technical positions received the highest salary increases.
Annual salaries for electrical and systems engineers rose 28% and 26% respectively, while manufacturing engineers received an average increase of 7% and salaries for industrial engineers remained the same, according to the survey.
Salaries for engineers in technical fields, such as electrical and systems engineering, increased a total of 58%, while salary increases for other engineers were lower: civil (15%), mechanical (9%) and manufacturing (7%). Annual salaries for industrial engineers showed no increase and salaries for other positions such as product, project and quality assurance engineers decreased 9%.
